YES!! I feel like this angle has been missing from some of the discussion about Nosferatu. Like people are really confused why Ellen is so attracted to Orlock, even though he’s so disgusting. I'm a big fan of abject horror, especially wrt women's sexuality, and I definitely want to look further into how this showed up in the medieval period.
i love how nobody got their character's names used in this piece 🤣🤣
❝You can smell everything in this scene, can’t you? You don’t want to, but you can’t help but smell it.❞
i deliberately timed having an edible so i'd come up when the film started. i can't remember if i said this out loud or i only thought it but the thought 'i know it smells crazy in there' came up multiple times.
tbqh i cannot make myself remember the names of the nosferatu characters where they’re pretending not to have their dracula names, so if i didn’t use the actor names i’d just be calling them mina and jonathan. i’d be wrong but in a deeper truer sense i’d be right
I think it’s very fair for it not to work well for you! His other movies have the same kind of dense allusions and cool cinematography with some less heavy themes
That’s so kind! I do highly recommend the movie and the cinematography is beautiful - it bears some trigger warning as is probably clear from the essay but if you’re in the right frame of mind it’s fantastic
I just watched this at the movies and after returning home I put some leftovers in the fridge. To make room, I moved a container with an old avocado in it and proceeded to chop it up and add it to my worm bin. I thought about the film and sensed a connection, but couldn’t put it into words. So glad I found this randomly in my feed! Loved it!
You WRETCHED bitch this is amazing. Thank you!!!
wretched wretched thank you!
I watched it today, and loved both the film and this essay!
Thank you!! 😍

So beautifully put! What a disgustingly delicious movie.

it wasn't a bad thing, just funny.
Great essay, but I don’t think my stomach is strong enough for the film.

Definitely want to see the film now you’ve written about it so well, without spoiling it, Emily. I need to psych myself up first, though!

Eggers is pioneering new smelly frontiers. Please don’t sniff The Lighthouse on an empty stomach.
As a fellow medieval girly, I loved this !
medieval girlies rise! I’ve actually got an essay coming on the approaching age of the medieval girl
omg can’t wait! the medieval girly era has arrived !
